Domestic violence is physical, mental, sexual or emotional abuse in an intimate relationship.  It occurs when one person uses abusive tactics to gain power and control over a partner, their children, or former partner.

Unfortunately, domestic violence hits homes in every community. It has a devastating effect on victims, children, and families.  For unknown reasons, domestic violence has been proven to occur at a higher rate in low-income and/or immigrant communities throughout the world.  However, domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of wealth, social status, or ethnicity.

A battered person is often in serious danger.  Brazilian Alliance plans to build alliances with local and state anti-domestic violence agencies to provide a confidential and safe refuge for battered women and children. Brazilian Alliance’s social workers and shelter staff will help women evaluate their options and future plans.  Medical assistance, food and clothing, support groups, children's services, parenting groups, housing assistance, childcare and transportation are provided to shelter residents.

Domestic violence should not happen to anybody.  Ever.  Period.  But it does - and when it happens, there is help. Maybe you have lived with abuse, or it happened just once; maybe you work or live next to someone who is being abused right now.  Whoever you are, Brazilian Alliance can help you because we want to have a functional community supported by a functional family.

Brazilian Alliance’s main goal is to facilitate the initial communication about the battered person and the agency where they seek help.  Brazilian Alliance believes that a battered person under danger will feel more comfortable to come forward if they can speak with someone that understands their language and culture.  By having a Portuguese 24-hour hotline, we hope that this initial barrier will be sufficient to help battered women and children to come forward.

We hope to have safe shelters and programs to help women and their children live a normal productive life after being placed with us.  We will offer psychological therapy, legal aid, and a basic infrastructure to enable a battered women or child to succeed after using our services.

The mission of Brazilian Alliance Domestic Violence Clinic is to respond to calls for help from domestic violence victims, of all ages, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.  We give survivors the tools to transform their lives.  We seek to prevent future violence by educating the community and by redefining public perceptions about domestic violence.
